CHAPTER 11

 OBSESSIONS

Obsessions!  There is a hesitance among those who work

in the psychic and intuitive realm to work with this subject; to clarify the actions and reactions, the connotations, of this field.  A mental picture of someone who is obsessed can come to many persons.  They may be under the domination of a habit, a person or a compulsion that is in control of another individual.

The challenges to the worker are many.  First of all, we must be ASKED to help.  We are never to push ourselves forward.  The asking need not always come from the individual obsessed since they are too ill or don't realize their dangerous situation.  Others who may ask must be very warmly yet impartially loving, such as parents or family members.  They must "judge not, lest they be judged."

We must also affirm that we have no personal responsibility for the work done.  It is impersonal and performed by Universal Mind that touches the Divine Spark in the being to whom we extend help.  We ask for sufficient protection so that we are encompassed by the Divine Presence and nothing can come near which is not for us.

If we have any fear to do the work, it is far better to gently but firmly state to whoever has asked for help that this isn’t in our area of expertise.  The questioners should then go to the Creative Force within themselves and meet their own challenges or find someone who is more confident in this department.

Actually, obsession is not always a vicious thing placed upon us by another person but may be a habit that we will not or apparently cannot shake without help.  In either case, any habit which “has us” rather than we “have it” or that seems to be overwhelmingly put upon us by someone on the other side, is our own responsibility.  This is so because WE LET IT HAPPEN TO US.  No person or thing has power over us unless we permit it.

There are actually two types of obsession – small, personal ones which the individual is capable of handling, in which case a small bit of advice may be all that is necessary or perhaps the individual realizes their own challenge and doesn’t need any outside help.

A very small personal example of the later: during the last pregnancy of the author many years ago during World War II, she telephoned her husband to tell him she was pregnant.  Before she got the words out, he told her the night baker had quit.  The work of the bakery seemed to be more important than the personal situation so she worked during almost the whole nine months as the baker.  Any pregnant woman can realize this as almost an impossible task.

She reasoned she probably carried a low-grade fever during the entire time as she craved ice constantly.  She allowed herself to become addicted to cherry cokes and chopped ice from the drug store soda fountain.  She never visited the doctor again until she became ill a few weeks before the baby was born.  The mention of a soda fountain and the lack of medical care date her for soda fountains are rarely seen in today’s world and the medical neglect wouldn’t be allowed in this time period.  This apparently tiny habit which may seem small to others was huge to her.

It was an obsession to her since cherry cokes and ice chips “had her,” not the other way around.  She could give any number of excuses but as she understood it, she was responsible.  After the birth of her youngest son, she took charge of the habit.  She made up her mind not to touch a "cola product" of any kind until she was in control.  For two years she didn’t drink a drop of one.  Then, because she felt she had won her battle, she permitted herself an occasional one.  That’s where she still is more than fifty years later – she still drinks one once in a while.

You laugh at such a small habit?  It wasn’t little to her.  As she never drank alcoholic beverages nor smoked cigarettes or pot, nor sniffed cocaine, it was big to her that long ago and the remembrance is still real to this day.

Let us look at our own personal habits that we insist upon continuing even when we know they aren’t good for us before we go into heavier work.  Is this small habit an obsession because we feel we can’t get rid of it?  Think about it.  Do we have a strong enough personal will to say, “No more!” and stay with it?  If so, congratulations!  Take that same energy and belief into the larger field.

If, on the other hand, like St. Paul, the Christian missionary, we say, “I do not understand what I do; but instead I do what I hate . . . for even though the desire to do good is in me, I am not able to do it.  I don’t do the good I want to do; instead, I do the evil that I do not want to do.” (Rom. 7:15-18)

What are some things that may obsess us?  There surely are the well-known habits which are considered to be crimes and through which we are confined in jail or prison – pot smoking; cocaine sniffing, heroin mainlining, alcohol overuse.  These are the types of habits we meant when we mentioned the challenges of working with severe cases of obsession.  There is also the desire for wealth that can be a compulsion.  If our every thought and action drive us harder and harder to accumulate riches for the possession itself, we need help.

Perhaps we must be constantly busy, never permitting a quiet moment in our lives for thinking anything through; contemplating our place in the world.  Do we frantically clean house?  Envy another until we become ill with covetousness?  Constantly be on the phone so that we are pests to others?  These types of challenge are put upon us by ourselves.

Perhaps we recognize ourselves in the above or maybe we are asked for help along these lines.  If this our own challenge, we can recognize the addiction and place it in the hands of Highest Source in prayer or petition, thus:  “I lovingly give into your forgiving, healing hands this obsession of mine (or of another, if asked.)  It shall be according to your Will, not mine nor theirs.”  Just simple statements of faith like that can help overcome the desire that has had possession.

When we allow someone else to rule us; to submerge us in a different life, we have no freedom, no matter how much we love him or her or the person loves us.  We must recognize that this is not the Will of Universal Mind.  It is an obsessing love.  The same would be true if we held another in the bondage of our own selfish love.

True love never desires to control another.  It is not of our Creator’s Light.  When we see people in any situation attempting in subtle ways to control others, we realize we are dealing with negative psychology.  This is so, for instance, when people permit the deluge of advertisements that come in the mail to convince themselves that they need to buy something.  This is a type of obsession.

The Light of the Triune Ray, tempered to what is right for all concerned, must be poured upon this kind of love because it is not that of the Creator.  We have already learned the rules for using this magnificent tool.

Another situation that needs this treatment is the plight of senior citizens that often believe all the ads that come in the mail for various types of insurance which are purportedly needed.  Or they are convinced they have won a sweepstakes and that the prize has been lost.

It is very possible that the Power of the Word and of Thought is being used negatively toward those concerned.  This is obsession.  It should be recognized and the Freeing Word of clearing of body, mind and soul for all needs to be spoken for those open to this type of negation.

We must remind ourselves that if we are in need of a particular thing, it is our right and privilege to seek it, rather than having many things put upon us.

Look about and note obsessions in many forms that are designed to lure us into an addicting habit that we aren’t sure we want or need.  Politicians may try to influence us and our minds can become blurred with the ideas they are trying to force upon us.  It is our privilege to use our free will mind rather than absorb another’s philosophy.  We will then decide judiciously rather than through enticement.

Thought forces constantly surround us in the practical world.  Words and pictures that try to make us buy something we don’t need nor do something really unnecessary.  If this happens, we allow ourselves to be pulled into another’s orbit of persuasion.  We will remember that we learned in the beginning of this manuscript that we are bombarded every second by ideas from the ethers.  Many of those thought pictures are put out negatively.  Our prayers of protection put on us each day will help us avoid them.  We have the ability and free will to make a good selection!  Be free, not under anyone else’s power.  Know these thing for what they are – obsessions that close the mind to Truth.

We ask that healing may take place in all that hold excessive ideas – obsessions – and we use healing prayers for them.  We finish this portion of our work with statements of thanksgiving for the removal of evil.

Now we come to the more serious side of obsessions – that for which we need the extra protection.  This work is done on the inner plane and this is when we question if the work is ours to channel.

Medical persons of today are aware of possession of patients by powerful drugs but few have realized that there are those who have died but have chosen to stay “earth bound.”  These beings can attract serious conditions as they attach themselves to those on this side of the veil.  There are forces unseen by the human eye that can affect and control human beings on the earth plane.

Many souls who pass out of the physical life have a psychic rather than a spiritual body.   They still have the desires of the flesh very strongly.  There is no way for them to satisfy their cravings except to draw close to a human being on Planet Earth who is indulging in the same habit as they and whose personality light is bright.  Those on the other side try to get a “second hand high” through or from that person.

Take for example a man who is an alcoholic in this life.  He may wish to stop drinking and often say and believe, “I can’t do it because there’s something that seems to make me take another drink.”

When this happens, the person is probably speaking the truth for there may be an obsessing entity wrapped around him, especially the head, like an octopus.  It is pouring the thought on the victim to drink – more and more – and more.  The entity is only able to breathe in or absorb the fumes coming from the head of the drinker.  It receives but little satisfaction for its habit.  It is as though the person was dying of thirst and could only get one drop of water at a time.

This is the same with all the weaknesses or “sins” as the scriptures call them that afflict humanity.  So often theft, rape and even murder come from the unseen influences of entities that try to get satisfaction from human beings.

Sometimes, but not often, the one who is obsessed recognizes the condition and asks for help.  More often loved ones or friends ask for assistance for them.  There has to be a petition for help because of our free will.  Help can only be given when requested.

Here is a very simple way of helping someone like the ones above.  In our meditational time, first we pray the prayers of protection for one’s self and all other workers.  It is good to have three persons and it is especially helpful if one has the gift of extended vision, but if not, surely there is one who “feels” things strongly or has the gift of “knowing.”

Three working together make a trinity of Love, Life and Light.  This gives more power.  One looks or “feels,” another “speaks the Word” and the third holds the power or does silent prayer work.

It isn’t our job to help the obsessing soul.  There are millions of those in the inner kingdom whose work is to take care of the obsessor.  Our work is freeing the one on earth who is obsessed.

After our protection is complete, we invite in the angelic helpers.  It is our privilege to call upon the Hosts of Heaven to assist us.  Some are angels including the Masters of Wisdom, the Color Ray Workers, Scientists of the Heavens and all the healers from the Inner Temples of Healing.

The procedure is thus: 1) the workers and the patient must be protected. 2) The one being helped who is on this plane is called “into visibility” whether they are seated beside us or are many miles away.  We are not working with the personal being but with the inner being

.           We speak their name aloud three times.  If the one who can “see” doesn’t have a picture in sight, we say, “In the Name, through the Power and by the Word of Universal Mind, come forth into visibility and show your true identity.”  Sometimes the one being called is held back by the obsessing entity.  If they still aren’t seen, we say, “Whoever is holding this soul back from freedom, release it instantly in the Name of Universal Mind!”

The one who has the gift of vision may see the soul walking in erectly or creeping in on hands and knees or staggering, often falling down, lying prostrate.

We then ask the healers and helpers in the Inner to come to the person’s aid.  Often he/she will rise to their knees.  At that time we say, “In the Name of Universal Mind, Stand up!  Don’t be afraid.  We are here to help you.”  Then use this powerful statement:  “In the Name of Universal Mind, we take the great Sword of the Spirit in our mental hands and cut every line that binds this soul to the Dark Ones.

We allow time for this to take place before we declare, "In the Name of our Creator, dear one, you are absolutely free!  For this we give thanks.”

We call the healers and helpers again and ask them to take care of the soul for the one who has been freed is weak and needs the help that these unselfish workers can give.  Those who have helped are to be thanked and we also express our gratitude to our Creator for the privilege of helping and freeing one of its beloved ones.

The work is closed with a prayer of peace and thankfulness.

After an intricate piece of work like this is done, we always remove ourselves from the area for a while.  We shake our hands vigorously, then wash them to take us out of the atmosphere.  Stretch.  Walk outside for a bit.  Break up the atmosphere of intensity for this is work that takes stamina.

Ask Universal Mind to refill your energy and protection.

Don’t attempt to do more than one case of this type on any given day.

Give our Creator thanks that you have been protected from all psychic and emotional harms.  Be grateful for having been blessed to be a channel for the good work accomplished.

Rest and rejoice.
